Venezuelan Birthday Traditions: Ponqué, Gelatina, Tequeños & More

From the meringue-covered ponqué to tequeños, gelatina and the cotillón bag, here is what a classic Venezuelan birthday party looks like — and how to bring it to Central Florida.

Ask any Venezuelan about the birthday parties of their childhood and you will hear the same things: a table full of pasapalos, a cake covered in fluffy white meringue, a bowl of colorful gelatina, and a little bag of treats to take home at the end of the night.

For Venezuelan families in Davenport, Kissimmee and across Central Florida, these traditions are a way to keep a piece of home alive, and a fun way to share it with friends who did not grow up with them. Here is what a classic Venezuelan birthday looks like.

The cake: ponqué and torta with merengue

In Venezuela, a simple butter cake is often called a ponqué, a word that comes from the English "pound cake." The classic birthday cake builds on it:

  • A soft, golden sponge or ponqué, sometimes filled with arequipe (Venezuelan dulce de leche), pineapple or a fruit jam.
  • A thick layer of white meringue (merengue) piped all over, glossy and sweet.
  • Simple decorations: maraschino cherries, colored sprinkles, a plastic topper or the birthday child's favorite character.

That fluffy, white, cherry-topped cake is pure nostalgia for a lot of Venezuelans. It is very different from the tall fondant cakes on social media, and many families still prefer it. We love making both.

Other cakes you will often see at Venezuelan parties:

  • Tres leches – milk-soaked and creamy. Read what makes tres leches special.
  • Marquesa de chocolate – layers of chocolate cream and Maria cookies, served cold.
  • Torta de piña – pineapple cake, sweet and caramelized.

The food: pasapalos

Pasapalos are the party snacks, and a Venezuelan party is not complete without them:

  • Tequeños – fried sticks of white cheese wrapped in dough. Usually the first thing to disappear.
  • Mini empanadas and pastelitos.
  • Mini cachitos – small rolls filled with ham.
  • Mini pan de jamón at holiday-season birthdays.
  • Golfeados or other sweet breads at some family gatherings.

The sweets table

Next to the cake there is usually a mesa de dulces:

  • Gelatina – bright, wobbly gelatin, sometimes layered in several colors or in a mold.
  • Quesillo – Venezuelan-style flan with caramel.
  • Besitos de coco, suspiros (meringue kisses) and golosinas (candy).

The traditions

  • The songs. After "Cumpleaños Feliz," many Venezuelan families also sing "Ay qué noche tan preciosa," a much-loved Venezuelan birthday song. Expect everyone, from grandparents to toddlers, to join in.
  • The piñata. A big one, often in the shape of the birthday child's favorite character, filled with candy and small toys.
  • The cotillón. The goodie bag that every child takes home: candy, small toys, party hats and noisemakers.
  • Late nights. Parties start late, end later, and grown-ups dance long after the cake is cut.

Bringing the tradition to Central Florida

Many Venezuelan families in Davenport, ChampionsGate, Kissimmee and Celebration want their kids to grow up with these traditions, even far from home. A few ideas:

  1. Mix the old and the new. A themed cake for the kids and a classic meringue-and-cherry cake for the grown-ups.
  2. Pick a Venezuelan flavor. Ask for arequipe filling, guava with cheese or papelón con limón flavors. See our Venezuelan flavors.
  3. Add Venezuelan colors. Yellow, blue and red, with the eight stars, are a lovely way to honor home.
  4. Explain the traditions to guests who are new to them. Everyone loves a tequeño once they have tried one.
